What is a value proposition?

A value proposition is the clear reason why someone should choose your company, product, or role over any alternative. It defines the value you deliver and why it matters.

In hiring, it’s what makes candidates say yes. In business, it’s what makes customers choose you.

Why value proposition matters

Without a strong value proposition, you compete on price, salary, or convenience. With it, you compete on impact, differentiation, and long-term value.

It’s the foundation of positioning—both in the market and as an employer.

What makes a strong value proposition

Clarity on the problem you solve.
Clear benefits for the target audience.
Differentiation from competitors.
Consistency across communication and experience.

Business impact

A strong value proposition improves conversion—whether that’s candidates accepting offers or customers buying your product.

It also aligns internal teams around a clear message.

Example

Instead of “we offer great opportunities,” a company positions itself as “the place where early employees build products used by millions,” making the value tangible.
